My name’s Alex. I go to school, have a family who cares, I’m mostly normal. Mostly. I have a long list of medical issues, some significantly more severe than others. But, the one that matters in this story is depression. One day, I was feeling more down, so I came up with an idea to make myself feel better instead of self-harm. Hugs.

Yes hugs, I created a “Free Hugs” sign and wore it to school. Even the people who didn’t like me hugged me.  At the end of the day there was a guy who looked as sad as I usually felt, so I walked up to him and asked if he wanted a hug. He smiled at me, stood up and hugged me.

The next day, he came up to me and told me his own story, and that he was going to kill himself that night, but that hug had stopped him. Down the road, we became amazing friends, and now, we share everything. We’re best friends. We’re husband and wife.

A hug saved his life, and possibly mine. If I hadn’t worn the sign, I would have self-harmed. I wouldn’t have met Kaden. I wouldn’t be who I am today. I finally understand why people say “Hugs make the world go round.”
