My fight to the light
I’m Danielle, I’m 16 and a junior in high school. I am on the rugby team and in honors classes.
When I was eight years-old, my 60 year-old uncle raped me. This happened until I was 12. When I turned 15, it was hard for me to wake up, and I was giving up because of all the memories. Things were not easy at home either. I was skipping my classes and lying to my mom. One day I was thinking about suicide, and I got hit by a car. I went home and cut myself. My mom took me to the emergency room, and I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
The hospital saved me. There, I found out that I am a survivor and what happened was not my fault. They got my condition under control. When I got out, I made new good friends. And I do not know what I would do without them because they are my support system and they are not going away.
I am doing amazing now. You can survive. All you need to do is speak. I wish I spoke sooner. If something happened to you, it is not your fault. You are the victim and have no reason to protect the person who hurt you.
